Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Donald was studying engineering when he was called up in February 1943 and accepted for flight training. On his 21st birthday he was assigned a crew who were then shipped to England as a replacement crew at Polebrook. He flew on 28 missions in 1945; although the threat from the Luftwaffe had diminished flak was still a big problem. Discharged in June he finished his degree and was employed by Maytag until his retirement in 1984, having stayed in the Reserve until 1983.
