Arnold L Weyand

Military

Weyand was a member of the 406th Sub-Depot Maintenance unit at Flixton AFB. The unit was responsible for tackling those aircraft too badly damaged for the line crews to manage and their skills were legion including engine-rebuilding, instruments, sheet metal work, armaments etc. Every day they watched and counted as the planes returned from a mission and, although they had little personal contact with the crews, felt the losses deeply.

Weyand considers himself very fortunate; he came back from the war, his education paid through the GI Bill, home loans were subsidized and he was given so many things denied to so many other young men.
