Dick was born on August 25, 1921, in Bellwood, PA, to Josiah and Etta Hostler Markley. He served his country in the United States Army Airforce during WWII. He had a story about his service published in the News Journal on March 24, 2008. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross during his service to his country.
