Lieutenant Harold Korger in the 9th Air Force and the 98th Bomb Group. Flew as bombardier aboard the B-24D Liberator, Hail Columbia, flown by Group Leader, Col. John R. Kane, on Operation Tidal Wave over Ploesti Romania. He survived the mission and successfully bombed his target, code named, White IV, the Astra Romano refinery complex. Korger's shot up B-24, Hail Columbia, navigated by his close friend, Lt. Norman, "The Baron", Whalen, made it back to the British air base at Nicosia, Cyprus, and survived the crash landing, after the pilots, John Kane and John Young, landing in the dark, hit a ditch the British had dug across the main runway's threshold, which destroyed and broke off, Hail Columbia's landing gear. 1 Aug 1943.
