On 20 June 1944, B-24 42-94892 of the 68th Bomb Squadron, 44th Bomb Group, was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire on a bombing mission to Politz, Germany.
First Lieutenant John R Anderson, another 68th Bomb Squadron pilot, was the last to have radio contact with the crew. He later reported that they had informed him that 'the aircraft had sustained considerable damage; one engine out, but was okay and was heading for Sweden.'
