P-47D-2-RE 42-7967 was assigned to the 56FG/61FS at Halesworth, UK. On 11-Dec-42 the aircraft, piloted by 2LT Lawrence R. Strand, was despatched with other P-47s from 56FG to provide escort to bombers attacking at Emden, Germany. 2LT Strand was flying as "Yellow #2" in Yellow Flight when the flight spotted as group of German fighters over the North Sea. In lining up for the attack, 42-7967 sustained a mid-air collision with "Yellow #4", P47D 42-8606, piloted by 2LT Edward J Kruer. Both aircraft were severely damaged and crashed into the North Sea north-west of Langeoog Island. 1KIA MACR 1537.
