B-24J "Quivering Box of 446th Bomb Group / 705th Bomb Squadron was hit by Flak on return from the 21 July 1944 mission to Munich, Germany. One engine caught fire imediately and another stopped. According to a statement in the Missing Air Crew Report (MACR 7250), either 7 or 8 men whose parachutes were seen to open jumped from the plane. Soon after these men jumped, and after the aircraft had descended out of control to a point a few thousand feet below the accompanying formation, it blew up in mid-air. The parachute from the last man to jump from the ship was afire and one man was seen to peel out of his chute after same opened. There were eleven men on board : Pilot Captain Eric H. Sherman (POW); Co-Pilot 1st Lt John E. Hand Jr (KIA); Navigator 1st Lt Glenn W. Hoffman (KIA); Bombardier 1st Lt Nelson T. Segraves (KIA); Nose Turret Gunner Captain Calvin T. Ballard (KIA); Engineer / Top Turret Gunner T/Sgt William S. Lutes (POW); Radio Operator T/Sgt William Kopczynski (POW); Ball Turret Gunner S/Sgt William A. McDonald (KIA); Right Waist Gunner S/Sgt Euylse E. Jackson (KIA); Left Waist Gunner S/Sgt Leiding G. Olson ( (KIA); Tail Gunner S/Sgt John T. Clay (Died of wounds)
