42-41004 - The Urgin Virgin
Changed aircraft name from all capital letters for clarity and accuracy. - Kickapoo
Note : The B-24D, 42-41004, named, The Urgin' Virgin, in the 8th Air Force in the ETO, should not be confused with another B-24J, named, Urgin' Virgin, SN 42-50754, and two other B-24D Liberator bombers that flew on the Ploesti mission, both named, The Vulgar Virgin, but with different serial numbers : 42-40608, and, 41-24198, that had identical names and nose art.
On November 13, 1943, the B-24D liberator, 42-41004 named, The Urgin' Virgin, was shot down and lost with all crewmen Missing In Action (MIA). The airplane was in the 93rd Bomb Group, and the 329th Bombing Squadron, based at Hardwick, England, and was flown by Command Pilot 2nd Lt. Floyd Ramsey with Copilot Lt. Benjamin Byers. They had taken off from Hardwick on a bombing mission to Bremen, Germany. Bad weather caused part of the 1st Bombardment Force to abandon the operation during assembly. Eight B-24s from the 93rd Bomb Group (2nd Bomb Force) made visual attacks on Heligoland as a Target of Opportunity. The B-24D, 42-41004, The Urgin' Virgin, was last seen banking to the right by Lt. Leonard D. Lange, a pilot of another B-24 in the formation of B-24s. The Urgin' Virgin, 42-41004, was not seen or heard from again, and the entire 11 man crew was lost and was Missing In Action (MIA). Missing Air Crew Report - MACR 2182.
