The B-24D, Liberator, 41-23774, was one of the original nine B-24Ds assigned to the 8th Air Force, the 44th Bomb Group, and the 67th Bomb Squadron, prior to moving to Britain and the ETO. 20 Sep 42.
The plane was later transferred to the 44th Bomb Group's 68th Bomb Squadron with it's RCL call letter, S, added to it's vertical stabilizer fins.
Later, it was transferred to 93rd Bomb Group and the 409th Bomb Squadron and renamed, Geronimo, before the final name, Hitler's Nightmare, and the 68th Bomb Squadron's emblem could be applied by the 68th's artist Jack E. Loman.
While temporarily detached (TDY) to the 9th Air Force and the 93rd Bomb Group in North Africa, Lt. Norman Charleson had a runway accident at Hardwick in, 41-23774, which was, at that time, still named, Geronimo. 20 Aug 43. It is in the 93rd Bomb Group's records as having been battle damaged and salvaged. 23 Aug 43.
