My father, James J. Mahoney, was a 27 year-old Lt. Col. in command of the 859th Bomb Squadron of the original hard-luck 492nd BG (H) from late April to early August, 1944, when they were effectively stood down. He and a substantial portion of the aircrews from North Pickenham, moved to the 467th BG (Rackheath) where they constituted the 'new' 788th BS. I am an author-researcher on WW II and specifically air power. I am involved with volunteer organizations commemorating the two BGs and the Second Air Division (Heritage League). I am leading an effort to combine in a single database all of the quantitative data harevested from original sources (such as National Archives and AFHRA) for the 8th AF, to be made freely accessible to all...wanna help?
