42nd Bomb Wing


US Air Force Combat Units of World War II Description

Constituted as 42nd Bombardment Wing (Dive) on 8 February 1943 and activated on 16 February. Redesignated 42nd Bombardment Wing (Medium) and transferred overseas without personnel and equipment, and assigned to Twelfth AF, on 31 July 1943. Received groups in August 1943 and served in combat in the Mediterranean and European theatres until the end of the war. Returned to the US in October 1945. Inactivated on 25 October 1945.
