Smith became a PoW on 21 March 1944 when his Mustang was one of seven downed by German flak in the Bordeaux region of France during a four-hour long strafing mission of enemy airfields in the area.
Three days earlier, he had been flying with Freeburger as his wingman when the latter was shot shot down and killed by Fw 190s near Nancy.
