Fred entered the service on 25 June 1942 from Sacramento, California. He enlisted as a Private. (Enlisted Service #: 39390687) He had one year of college education, was married, and his civilian occupation was listed as: "Guards and watchmen, except crossing watchmen."

Frank Guild, in his history of the 437th: "Action of the Tiger", identifies Captain Armagost as the 437th's 'G-4' - that would be the Group Supply Officer. Captain Armagost stayed in the military and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel on 27 December 1962. In the Lincoln (Nebraska) Star, 19 February 1954, Major and Mrs. Armagost are welcomed to the area, and he is identified as Director of Materiel, having recently returned from a tour of duty in Japan
