Military

LWG, Laux crew. 381st BG, 532nd BS, 8th AF. Damaged by fighters on the return from mission #67 to the marshalling yards at Frankfurt am Main, GR on 11 Feb 1944. B-17 42-31099 'Tenabove' crashed near Poix-de-Picardie, FR after the crew bailed out. MACR 2431. Evaded. EE report 523.

Sgt Glennan was a former radio mechanic with the 532nd BS. he finished gunnery school and was flying his third mission when shot down. He was wounded in the foot by 20mm shell and Lt Doyle dressed it and gave him morphine. He met up with S/Sgt Holton who went to make contact with two other downed crew members but was captured along the way. Sgt Glennan eventually met up with Sgt Helfgott and other members of his crew until returned to England on 24 March 1944.

"S-Sgt. Jack GLENNAN surprised his family Friday when he returned home unexpectedly for a 21-day furlough, decorated with the Purple Heart and the Air Medal, after 11 months overseas.

Sgt. GLENNAN left England last Sunday by plane, and stopped at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri for reclassification on his way home. He told his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom GLENNAN, Cameron College, that he "feels grand", despite his wound by a 20-mm shell for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also was awarded the Air Medal before he left England, for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight.

"I'm damned glad to be back," he said at Jefferson Barracks. "I hope to catch up on my eating, especially milk, on my furlough. I believe I'll buy a cow - if I can find someone to get up in the mornings to milk her."

A waist gunner aboard a Flying Fortress which was based in England, he was forced to "take to the chute" over enemy territory in February, and returned by unrevealed methods to his base two months later. While he may not reveal the number of missions he undertook, nor the cities he helped blast, Sgt. GLENNAN admitted that the raid on which he was wounded was "not my first". He is a graduate of St. Mary's High School and of St. Gregory's College at Shawnee. He has been in the Army Air Corps since September, 1942."
