James K Johnson
MilitaryLt James K. Johnson was flying on P-47D Serial #42-75505 in an escort mission for B-24s targeting aerial industry installations in Brunswick, Germany. His aircraft was last sighted above the Steinhuder Meer, about 90km NW of Brunswick. Heading back to base, his P-47 was hit by Flak over Holland and crashed about 1km North of the Luftwaffe airfield at Twente (the present-day Enschede Airport Twente), close to the city of Deurningen, near the road from Hengelo to Oldenzaal, Overijssel Province, The Netherlands. Wounded, Lt Johnson was immediately captured and shipped West to the Luftwaffe hospital in Apeldoorn. He left the hospital on 14 June 1944 to be sent to Information Center West. He was ultimately interned at Stalag Luft 3 in Sagan, Poland.
