Lieutenant Robert I "Iron Man" Ross of the 352nd Fighter Group with his P-47 Thunderbolt (HO-O, serial number 42-8678) nicknamed "Skip". Printed caption on reverse: '15. "Skip" 487th FS HO-O, 42-8678, Lt Rober I "Iron Man" Ross. Application of the Squadron insignia "Lil Bastard" was very short lived on this Thunderbolt as when squadron CO Maj. J C Meyer noticed it having been applied to HO-O, advised Lt. Ross in no uncertain terms that if the insignia was going to be displayed on any 487th fighter it would be on his, so it was removed. Meyer applied the "lil Bastard" to two of the "D" model Mustangs he would fly. When Meyer left the squadron in Jan. of '45 due to injuries suffered from an auto accident, Lt. James Wood retained the insignia's presence on Meyer's Mustang he inherited.'
