Two 56th Fighter Group P-47 Thunderbolts serial number 41-6319 HV-M of the 61st Fighter Squadron, a P-47C and 42-7943 UN-K of the 63rd Fighter Squadron, a P-47D, collided in mid-air on the 5 February 1944. They were piloted by Lieutenants Roger A Phillips and Richard J Albert respectively. The P-47 Thunderbolt in this picture has lost its tail section and the lower half of the nose. Official caption on image: "33SG-4G19-3-P47-Air Collision." Handwritten caption on reverse: '56th FG. 5 Feb '44. 61st and 63rd. P-47 42-6319 and 42-7943. Lt Phillips & Albert.'
