The B-24D - Fightin' Sam, was inherited by the 801st Bomb Group (P) from the 389th Bomb Group from Station 179 on the night of 30 May 44. The Bales crew flew it for their first combat mission on the night of 31 May / 1 Jun 44. It was transferred to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) in late1944 with the 859th Bomb Squadron.
