Col. Ellis J. Whelles retired in 1974 from USAF as a colonel with a total combat flying time of 422 hours in P-51s and C-130s. Col. Ellis was born on June 14, 1922 in Austin, Texas. He died on 27 October 2006 and is buried in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
