IMAGELieutenant-Colonel Jack S. Jenkins of the 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, stands in front of P-38 Lightning (CG-J, serial number 42-67074), named "Texas Ranger", at Nuthampstead air base. Passed for publication October 1943. Printed caption attached to print: 'Fighting "Policemen" for the Bombers. When American Flying Fortresses raid enemy territory they are often accompanied by the P.38 Lightning fighters. It is not the job of these fighters to chase attaching German fighters, but to protect the formations of Flying Forts from being broken up by the Nazi fighters and then being attacked when separated. The P-38s have the longest ferrying range of any fighter aircraft today and they have been used in many capacities in the Pacific and N. African theatres of war. Keystone photo shows: Lt. Col. Jack Jenkins of Levelland, Texas and a P-38. ABS/F. Keystone 7.'
