Col. L B Hillsinger leaving his Hurricane at Hendon. He was the first USAAF officer permitted to return to operational flying after losing a limb. Here Col Hillsinger is shown leaving his British 'Hawker Hurricane' at an airfield in Hendon, Middlesex, England 4th May 1943. Lt Col L B Hillsinger was badly wounded, losing a leg, as an observer onboard the destroyer HMS Berkeley, sunk during the Dieppe Raid on Aug 19, 1942. NARA Ref# 342-FH-3A12428-79116AC
