Detailed History
The Arlington National Cemetery lies in Arlington County, Virginia. The cemetery was established in 1864 during the American Civil War to accommodate the remains of those who died in battle near Washington DC. There are approximately 400,000 headstones for deceased veterans and casualties from all wars fought by the United States since the Civil War, and for re-interred fallen from earlier conflicts. The cemetery is divided into 70 sections and contains 28 major memorials, and 142 minor memorials and plaques.
