Object Number - UPL 7475 - Lt. William R. Grounds, 389th. , standing on wing of his airplane, A6-G "Mary Evelyn"

Promoted to Captain on 15 October 1944, after being declared Missing In Action on 2 October. Shot down by Flak on 2 October 1944 near Vortum, Netherlands. MACR #9295

"I was leading Blue Flight as top cover, so I observed everything. Lieutenant Grounds completed his run and scored a direct hit. Then his plane seemed to execute a "vertical reverse", which ended in an inverted position. It never recovered and struck the ground in that position, still heading in a westerly direction." - Morton M. Koff, 1st Lieutenant, Air Corps
