William McClure Davis

Captain William Mc Clure Davis was pilot of 43-28464 on a strafing mission in the Orléans, France, area on 7 July 1944. Hit by light Flak, with mechanical failure, he had to force-land in burning Lightning in a field between Sai,t-Léger-des-Aubées and Santeuil, France. He managed to escape capture with the help of French citizens and members of the résistance. He was ultimately led to a secret camp in the Fréteval forest, near Châteaudun, France, where he was liberated by US troops on 13 August 1944. Missing Air Crew Report MACR 6664.
