353rd FG Records and friendship with Bill Streit.
He named his aircraft 'Scotty Bill' after lost friends. On the 11 May 1944 he was initially listed MIA but did manage to return to base after a close encounter with an FW 190 who had hit blown off his right aileron. The German pilot then flew right past him and saluted 'I saluted back, reached down to my stick to squeeze off my 8 guns, but too late, he headed home'.
