On April 9, 1944, while aboard B-17 tail #42-40051 of the 96th Bomb Group, 339th Bomb Squadron, he and his entire crew were shot down and killed over Nysted, Laaland Island, Denmark.

He is buried at the Fort Smith Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
