First Lieutenant Warren O. Van Winkle, a B-24 Liberator bomber pilot, was killed in action in a raid over Germany on May 12, 1944, after he had been on 27 missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart.
