Early in 1942 before the Bomber Command and Fighter Command were set up , the 15th Air Squadron flew a special mission on 4 July 1942 and attacked an airport in Holland, manned by the Germans. Matystik was part of the ground crew that helped to prepare for this mission. It was officially the very first mission for the 8th Air Force in World War II. Marystik was an armorer with the famed Boston Bomb Squadron that made the first mission. After many missions from England, the squadron distinguished in the AAF won a Presidential Citation and cluster for 'outstanding service'. . After further training Matystik was assigned to a bomb group in Italy (15th AAF)

Second World War formation badge for the United States 15th Air Force (United States Army Air Force). The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved by the US Quartermaster General on 19 February 1944. Formation note: the 15th Air Force (US Army Air Force, Fifteenth Air Force) was formed on 1 November 1943 at Tunis in North Africa and moved to Italy on 1 December.
