Winton entered the USAAF cadet program in 1942 and was initially a navigator with the 395 BG then joined the 385th at Spokane. and was acting group navigator with then August 1943 - February 1944. In May 1944 he was re-assigned to the 9th AF 31st Transport Group. He later joined the US Border Patrol retiring in 1973 as Deputy Chief Border Patrol for the Southwest Region. He had stayed in the AF Reserve retiring with the rank of Lt. Col.
