MilitaryHis obituary said: 'He was a retired first lieutenant from the U.S. Air Force, and served in World War II as a P-38 Lightning pilot in the 55th Fighter Group, stationed in England. He was shot down over Germany in 1943 and was a prisoner of war for one year, returning to Valley Forge, Pa., where he met his wife, Alice Sowers, a registered nurse.'
