Madel was described as 'a sort of combination ground and flying radio operator mechanic' in 'They Never Had It So Good', the unofficial squadron history. And, at the end of the war: 'They said a good-bye to Tom Madel on the twenty-first, too. Good old Tom. He had been a ground man, top man in the communications department. Now he was returning to the States...'
