Lt. Murphy was piloting B-17 (#42-5864) named "Piccadilly Lily" on a bombing mission over Bremen, Germany. After dropping his bomb load over the target, his plane was hit by a flak burst which caused a fire in the #3 engine and destroyed the navigators position. The plane was reported to have exploded in mid air and impacted the ground at Bremerhaven, Germany.
