Tom volunteered for military service upon America entering World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps from November 1942 until completion of the European Campaign, October 1945. He was very proud of his service and learned many of the skills he would use throughout his life, being a Sargent in the 410th Bomb Group L, 9th Bombardment Squadron, working on the Douglas A-20 Havoc bomber. During leave in October 1943, he married LaVon (Huffman) Havens.
