Sam Hartman MD served as a flight surgeon with the 96th Bomb Group at Snetterton Heath, England.
He took part in the Chowhound Mission on 1 May 1945 dropping food supplies: "I recall how cold it was and the sensation of exhilaration as we kicked out the bales of goodies. It was a strange and fearful feeling [flying] so dangerously low and not getting shot out."
