All except for pilot Cunningham and waist gunner Lobis became POWs – Cunningham was able to evade capture and SSgt. Morris L. Tryon (Left Waist Gunner) was a replacement gunner for Lobis on this mission and became a POW.

Prisoner of War (POW)

Krems an der Donau, Austria 6 September 1943 - 20 July 1945 Russell was captured by Nazi Germany, and was sent to Stalag 17B near Krems, Austria where 3,219 other American POWs were held. Russell's capture was first reported to the International Committee of the Red Cross on September 6, 1943, and the last report was made on July 20, 1945. Based on these two reports, Russell was imprisoned for at least 683 days (1 year and ~11 months). The average duration of imprisonment was 363 days. Ultimately, Russell was returned to military control, liberated or repatriated.
