Robert V Dougherty
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
He had hoped to be a pilot but his eyesight wasn't up to it and he eventually trained as a gunner. In June 1944 he shipped to England aboard the 'Mauretania', toting his trombone and became part of an impromptu band backing USO entertainers. He joined the 92nd at Podington and immediately became part of the Skyliners dance band. He flew on 35 combat missions and - when not flying - played with the band at local dances. His last mission was 1st February 1945 but he was persuaded to stay on by his commanding officer - going with the band all over England, France and Africa 'morale building'. He was finally discharged that November.
Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters.
