Bob was born in Coleraine on June 23, 1920 to Dan and Mary O'Clock. He attended Greenway Schools and graduated from Itasca Community College in 1940. In 1941 he entered Pilot Training in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Air Corps Reserve in July 1942. He was immediately sent to North Africa in support of the British Eighth Army as a Flight Leader in the 340 Bombardment Group. He flew 52 combat missions in Africa, Sicily, and Italy and then was given R&R duty at Miami Beach, Fla. His high school sweetheart, Myrna Jean Anderson of LaPrairie was stationed there as a Yeoman in the U.S. Navy. Myrna and Bob married in Miami, Fla., on Nov. 30, 1943. Myrna stayed in the Navy until 1945 while Bob flew planes worldwide, ferrying new aircraft of all types to overseas bases and as pilot in the Army TRANSPAC Airline throughout the Pacific Ocean area. In 1946 Bob left the Army to continue his education at the University of Minnesota where he earned his Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and Masters of Science degrees. In 1949 the U.S. Air Force recalled Bob to active duty. His assignments were both stateside and overseas with duties primarily as a Research and Development Director in ballistic missile and space systems programs. Bob's technical training and experience led to his selection for tours in the U.S. Intelligence agencies including the CLA, DLA, and the Air Force Foreign Technology Division. During more than 30 years of military service, Bob earned ratings of Command Pilot and Command Missile man. His awards include: Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, eight Air Medals, and Joint Service medals. After more than 38 years of service, Myrna and Bob retired to the Sierra Nevada foothills of California at the Lake of the Pines, Auburn, Calif. |
