On 14 January 1945, B-17 #44-8314 'Pair-a-dice Kids' suffered runaway prop whilst en-route to Derben. Dropped out of formation. Hit by flak over Rostov, Germany, whilst heading for Finland. Lost 2nd engine. Met by Swedish fighter plane and escorted to airfield at Malmo. They were interned in a retirement home, allowed complete freedom, able to participate in sports, attend dances etc. but any attempt to escape would be met with imprisonment. Post war he attended the University of Iowa, worked in insurance and stayed in the AF Reserve until 1983.
