Robert Ignatious Doyle

C.1944 Robert I Doyle was assisted Sergeant Antoni Stefan Murkowski of No 316 Squadron, Polish Air Force, during a bomber mission when his aircraft was attacked and forced to ditch. Murkowski radioed Doyle's position to air sea rescue, and was later sent a photograph of Bob with a message of thanks.
Doyle remained in the US Air Force following the end of the Second World War serving as a camera operator with the 16th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron. He was killed in a flying accident on 3 November 1948, when his RB-29 Superfortress (44-61999) Over Exposed crashed into Bleaklow moorland, Derbyshire in bad weather on a routine flight from RAF Scampton to RAF Burtonwood.
