Paul Jr. Dies at Age 79 Robert Henry Paul Jr., 79, who retired from the Agency for International Development in 1974 as deputy director of the inspections and investigations staff, died Oct. 6 at Suburban Hospital. He had Alzheimer's disease, congestive heart failure and hypertension. After retiring, he did real estate work at Bethesda Realty through the 1970s. He also did consulting work for AID and the Peace Corps through the mid-1980s. Mr. Paul, a Bethesda resident, was born in Baltimore and raised in Annapolis. He was a graduate of Annapolis High School and received a law degree in 1941 from the University of Baltimore. He served in the Army Air Forces in Europe during World War II and received 10 Air Medals. He was a special agent with the FBI from 1946 to 1953, working in Albany, N.Y., and then in Washington. In 1953, he joined the Foreign Operations Administration, an AID predecessor, and worked on internal investigations in Europe and the Far East before settling in the Washington area in 1969. He had been a member of North Bethesda United Methodist Church, the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI and the Masons. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Betty Carey Paul of Bethesda; two sons, Robert C., of New York, and Richard W., of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; two sisters, Mildred Bailone of Baltimore and Evelyn Leese of Ocean View, Del.; and three grandsons. |
