My father was Robert H. Johnson, known by “Bob” to most. My name is Robert S. Johnson, and I am the older son. My father was a Technical Sergeant and a radio operator/gunner on a couple of B-17s. He was aboard “Old Glory” on a bombing run when engine #3 was hit by flak, and the plane exploded. Somehow he managed to bail out. The Germans saw his chute but could not locate him, as his hid in a swamp until dark. He managed to find the home of some sheep farmers who took him in and hid him until the “Liberation” in September, 1944. All other crew members were killed. In addition to the Air Medal, he was awarded a Purple Heart.
