Dümmer, Germany | 2 March 1945 - 2 March 1945 | KIA 2 Mar 45 Mission 859. Plane crippled by flak, became straggler. According to some reports (unconfirmed), plane was flying low over Dummer Lake area, badly damaged, one wheel down, when it broke apart in flames. Sgt. Shaddy refused to leave aircraft to help crew members, Ratliff, Swartz, and CP Knoll get out. Remainder of crew exited, and were POW for remainder of war. Aircraft reportedly crashed near Dummer Lake ( Dummersee) area, Germany ( unconfirmed, reports conflicting on this) Shaddy was recommended for Silver Star for Gallantry by Pilot , and was awarded Oct 1945.
