he was assigned in 1944 for overseas duty in England with the Eighth Air Corp. had completed 27 combat missions and 170 combat hours as a B-24 pilot. On 31-Jul-44 he and his crew were on loan to the 389th Bomb Group to fly pathfinder against a chemical works Plant in Ludwigshafen, on board was future Major General Andrew Low who was a Major at the time. Under intense anti aircraft fire which disabled two engines and set fire to the aircraft, Major Lamb refused to relinquish his lead position on the final approach to the target and successfully dropped his bombs on the assigned target before abandoning his aircraft. He was held as a Prisoner of War (POW) until April, 1945.
