6 March 1944 | . On March 6, 1944, were scheduled to participate in a bombing raid on Berlin. En route to the target, the aircraft was engaged by a number of enemy aircraft. The attacks left several of the crew dead or wounded, and the aircraft with severe damage. Attempting to retain control of the aircraft, Lt. Koper gave the bail-out signal. Only three of the crew made a successful exit of the aircraft, and, upon landing, they were captured by German troops. The rest of the crew were still in the aircraft when it exploded and crashed near Hannover. Lt Koper's body was recovered and buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery. His remains were later returned to the USA and he was buried on March 3, 1950 in Beloit | |
