Died

Round Rock, TX 12 September 2010 Raymond Richard Flugel was born on November 24, 1919 in Rochester, New York. He died quietly in the arms of his loving wife, Norma, on September 12, 2010 in Round Rock, Texas. Born the son of an immigrant, coupled with the loss of his father at the age of twelve, he learned early the value of family, hard work and an education. These values would define and guide him throughout his life. Fueled with little more than ambition and hope, he worked his way through Georgetown University where he earned his bachelor's degree. Upon graduation, he worked at the Library of Congress until he answered the call to arms and began his career as a navigator in the Army Air Corps during WWII in the fight for Europe. He continued his education, receiving his master's degree from Harvard University, while serving in the military. He served in the Korean War, and was stationed throughout the United States and in Japan (where he gained a huge appreciation for Japanese culture) during his 20 years as an officer in the Air Force. He completed his PhD from the University of Oklahoma shortly after retiring. He then entered the life of academia as a professor of Social Science at St. Edward's University in Austin. Later in life, he taught at Austin Community College. He was a gifted scholar who could mesmerize his listeners with his comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of world politics/affairs, history and geography. Yet, his greatest accomplishment, and what he cherished above all else, was the family he created with the love of his life, his wife Norma. Together they walked the path of good Catholics, nurturing and raising nine children, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was a frugal and remarkably resourceful provider; making sure his children always had at their disposal a bike to ride, book to read, tree to climb, as well as a list of chores to accomplish. He loved family gatherings and spent countless hours in laughter and good cheer, basking in the delights that only a family can bring. His own pursuit of excellence, sense of social justice and love of nature shaped his parenting and inspired his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Norma; his sister; nine children; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
