MilitaryRWG, Painter crew. 381st BG, 532nd BS. Shot down 17 August 1943 in B-17 #42-30140 'King Malfunction II'. Mission #20 "Black Tuesday" to the ball bearing works at Schweinfurt, Germany. MACR 379. Evaded.

EVD Report 171. S/Sgt Genz bailed out and was shot at by a farmer with a rifle while descending in is parachute. He met up with 1Lt Nelson (CP). They soon found S/Sgt Whitman (LWG) in a tree. He was injured after falling out of his harness. The group also found S/Sgt Kellogg (LWG) who was wounded. S/Sgt Genz and 1Lt Nelson agreed with the other two injured men that they could not go on. The wounded men would turn themselves in to the Germans the next day. Genz and Nelson continued to evade and with assistance from the underground, made it back to England through Madrid and Gibraltar on 30 October 1943.
