2Lt Paul Frederick Reichert, He enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Force in July 1941. He was

commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in July 1943. He was married a week before his

commissioning. He was assigned to the Eighth Army Air Force, 457th

Bombardment Group, 751st Squadron. The 457th took up position in Glatton,

England, about 50 miles north of London on January 21, 1944. The unit flew

their first mission on February 21, 1944. On the morning of September 28,

1944, B-17G #43-38181 flew from Glatton (station #130) to Magdeburg, Germany

to bomb an oxygen? plant. Paul Reichert was the co-pilot. Just before noon,

before arriving at their target, the squadron flying at 25,000 feet, was

attacked by 25 to 50 Me 109s and FW 190s. Lt. Reichert's plane was hit in

the # 1 and # 2 engines. Only the navigator survived. After the war he

reported that the pilot and copilot went down with the plane. Paul's body

was buried by a local German committee near Magdeburg and was identified

four and a half years later and reburied in the American Military cemetery

in Margraten, the Netherlands...
