Severely wounded on final mission in B-24 'Shoot Luke', having been hit by 20mm cannon shell in hip and ejected from his tail position, dangling in slipstream by one foot. Wounded in Action (WIA). In addition to the damage to his hip, his right ankle was broken, his collar bone and four ribs from his semi-ejection. Hospitalised for five months and medically discharged in Jan-44.
