Shot down by fighters on mission to Halberstadt on 11 Jan 1944 in B-17 #42-30782. POW at Stalag Luft 1 Barth-Vogelsang Prussia 54-12. The plane was hit hard in the leading edge of a wing and the extensive damage caused the plane to go into a spin. A raging fire ensued and the plane broke up in the air. He had minor flak wounds when he bailed out and landed near a small Dutch town.
