10 September 1944 | Source: Evening Star. Washington DC. September 10, 1944, Page B-2 story DFC Winner Repeats Feat of Landing Fort On Only Two Engines For extraordinary achievement in aerial combat, First Lt. Meyer Tupler, 1223 Concord N.W., pilot of a Flying Fortress in the European theater, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The lieutenant twice brought flak-riddled ship back to base on two engines, once from inside Germany and more recently from a bombing mission over France. On the latter operation his ship, "Taffy's Boys," was hit by a close flak burst, immediately knocking out one engine. He tried to keep up with the formation, when he was suddenly informed by the ball-turret gunner that gasoline was running out through the bomb bay. Flak has broken the fuel transfer line to No. 3 engine. To prevent fire, Lt. Tupler cut that engine - both engines on one side were out Flak also had damaged the controls and the automatic pilot, and the fuselage was full of holes. Over the English Channel the lieutenant asked his crew if they were willing to try to get to England or if they wanted to bail out. All agreed to stay with the ship. Struggling constantly with the injured fortress, Lt. Tupler nursed it back to England. The crew again agreed to take a chance on landing at their home field rather than bail out with their radio operator seriously injured. The approach to the field was perfect, but Lt. Tulles lost control, going down the runway and the ship started to careen wildly across the grass. Crash crews and ambulances set out after it - expecting the plane to burst into flames or crash. Amazingly enough, the ship stayed on an even keel and the crew raced out of it like rabbits, grabbing the pilot and yelling, "What a landing! Terrific! And the second one on two engines." | |
